February is Black History Month, and many special events are planned on campus. A variety of film screenings include titles such as “Black Orpheus,” “Talking Black in America,” James Blue’s award-winning film “The March,” and Duck After Dark’s screening of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

The University of Oregon continued its multiyear streak of increasing grant funding in fiscal year 2021-22 (FY22). Numerous faculty members received recognition for their contributions to research, as well as the number of research awards with direct positive effects on local and regional communities.

LINGUISTICS - Two University of Oregon linguistics professors have received funding from the National Science Foundation for a collaborative seminar, Research Experiences for Undergraduates, to be conducted over three summers.

Seven faculty members have been recognized for their exceptional teaching with the 2022 Distinguished Teaching Awards. Recipients of the University of Oregon annual awards are tia north, Katie Lynch, Keli Yerian, Michael Aronson, Lara Bovilsky, David Steinberg and Tina Starr.

Two interdisciplinary teams have been awarded seed funding through the Incubating Interdisciplinary Initiatives awards, known as I3 awards, which provide up to $50,000 to University of Oregon research teams.

LINGUISTICS - Many factors contribute to communication struggles between aging patients and their healthcare providers, and University of Oregon linguist Melissa Baese-Berk hopes to boil those difficulties down to their linguistic elements and improve communication in the health care setting.

LINGUISTICS - UO associate professor of linguistics Gabriela Pérez Báez has helped launch the first international, open access, multilingual journal entirely dedicated to the revitalization and sustainability of Indigenous and minoritized languages.

LINGUISTICS - A Yakama Nation elder and language teacher who was the University of Oregon’s oldest-ever graduate will reach a major milestone next week.

LINGUISTICS - The UO Department of Linguistics has received a federal COVID-19 relief grant to support curriculum, outreach and student employees in the Northwest Indian Language Institute and National Breath of Life Archival Institute for Indigenous Languages.
