Provost Jim Bean and Vice Provost for International Affairs Dennis Galvan meet with Senegalese National Archives Director Fatoumata Cisse Diarra and her team – hosted by the UO’s NSRC and led by Director Steve Huter
A group organized by the Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC), University of Oregon Knight Library, the National Archives of Senegal and the Université Cheikh Anta Dip de Dakar (UCA) worked together at the UO from August 4-13, 2012 to begin creating digital archives from a collection of colonial era documents managed by the National Archives of Senegal. In addition to the UO, the program received sponsorship from the National Science Foundation, Google, and O’Reilly Media.
The valuable historic collections managed by the National Archives of Senegal span all of former francophone West Africa, with documents dating back to the 18th century, including detailed records of the slave trade in the region. The UO assisted the delegation from Senegal with learning conservation techniques to protect the physical documents, combined with digitization and preservation strategies for creating 21st century digital library collections that can be made available via the Internet to researchers around the world.
